Slugs and snails are back in top spot as the most-hated pest

Slugs and snails are back in top spot as the most-hated pest for gardeners, after a year of playing second fiddle to box tree moth. The slimy critters topped the annual RHS poll of the most asked-about pests and diseases, based on enquiries they received at their Gardening Advice Service.

Slugs and Snails

Honey fungus was named most troublesome plant disease for the 21st year running, with RHS scientists identifying it on 70 different types of plant.

But the top 10 list also contained some more unfamiliar nasties. Fuchsia gall mite, first found in the UK in 2007, has moved up to third place: these microscopic mites are now widespread across southern England and infest new fuchsia shoots, ruining both flowers and foliage.

Glasshouse thrips have also become more troublesome since the warming climate enabled them to survive outside greenhouses and infest outdoor shrubs.
